Peregrine Falcon Nest Box, Topeka Live Cam

This camera looks into a peregrine falcon nest box on the roof of an office building on South Kansas Avenue in downtown Topeka, Kansas. The frame shows a deep tray of small pebbles between weathered wooden boards and metal side walls.

Peregrine falcons began nesting on the roof of this building in 1993, and a camera has followed the nest since 2000. The building stands a short walk east of the Kansas State Capitol. In a typical year the falcons lay their eggs in mid-March or early April, and the chicks hatch after about 33 to 35 days.

This view stays on the nest scrape itself, where the eggs are laid and the chicks are raised, while a second camera watches the wooden ledge outside the box. Outside the nesting season the gravel often lies empty apart from a stray feather.
