Weather and time
This camera stands on Devils Peak, the 740-metre summit of Santa Cruz Island and the highest point of the Channel Islands of California. It turns between the island's ridges of grass and scrub, the open Pacific and Santa Rosa Island across the channel.
Devils Peak, also called Mount Diablo, rises 2,429 feet above the sea on Nature Conservancy land inside Channel Islands National Park. No other ocean island in the contiguous United States has a higher mountain. Santa Cruz, the largest island in California, is about 35 km long, and visits to the summit area need a permit.
Looking west, folded brown ridges drop toward the water, and Santa Rosa Island lies low on the horizon with a pale sand spit at its eastern tip. Other positions face neighbouring summits or a hazy sea horizon. After dusk the picture turns black and white.
