Goats stand around a covered pen and a water trough on a smallholding at Salem, in eastern Connecticut. The camera looks into the yard from the side of the shelter.

Kids climb whatever is in the pen within days of being born, which is what the platforms and barrels are for. Goats have rectangular pupils that give them a very wide field of view without turning their heads, and the eyes rotate to stay level when the head tilts down to graze.

Salem is a town of about four thousand people in New London County, between the Connecticut River and the Rhode Island line. Small dairy and fibre herds like this one are what is left of farming across most of this part of New England.
