Weather and time
This wide-angle camera looks south-east across the floor of Embleton Quarry in Northumberland, with open sky filling most of the frame. Scrubby quarry banks rise on both sides, and the roofs of houses sit on the skyline.
Embleton Quarry lies on the north-eastern edge of Embleton, a village close to the Northumberland coast. Whinstone was cut here until 1961, and the hollow is now a nature reserve where Exmoor ponies graze the whin grassland. Its low light pollution has made it a recognised dark sky site.
Unlike the north-facing camera beside Quarry House, this one takes in a broad sweep of the southern and eastern sky. On clear nights stars rise over the quarry, and meteor showers such as the Perseids in August can leave bright trails across the frame.
