Weather and time
Jenn Lann temple in the Dajia district of Taichung is dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess of the Taiwanese coast. The camera looks into the hall from above the offerings.
Once a year her image leaves the temple on a nine-day procession of about three hundred kilometres, walked by tens of thousands of people down to Xingang and back. It is one of the largest religious gatherings anywhere, and the roads along the route close for it.
Mazu was a real woman by tradition, a fisherman's daughter from Fujian in the tenth century who was said to save sailors, and she came across the strait with the people who settled Taiwan. Nearly every coastal town has a temple to her.
