Bermi Baiturohman Mosque, Mijen Live Cam

Masjid Baiturohman stands on the forecourt of Bermi village, in the Mijen district of Demak Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The webcam faces the arcaded porch across a paved yard where motorcycles park.

Demak carries unusual weight in Javanese history. It was the seat of the first Islamic sultanate on the island in the late fifteenth century, and the Great Mosque of Demak, with its tiered wooden roof, is the oldest surviving mosque in Java and a pilgrimage site.

The rhythm of the picture is set by the five daily prayers, when the yard fills and empties within the hour. Friday midday draws the largest gathering of the week.
