Levante Beach runs west from this view at Benidorm, on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante. Bathers stand in the shallow water in the foreground, and a line of high-rise blocks runs the length of the sand.

Benidorm was a fishing village until the 1960s and then built upwards rather than outwards, which is why it has more towers per resident than anywhere else in Spain. Levante faces east and southeast, so it takes the sun from first light.

The mountains behind hold off the cold, and the resort works through the winter as well as the summer. The camera stands in the Rincón de Loix district at the far end of the beach.
