São João da Caparica is the northern end of the Costa da Caparica, on the south side of the mouth of the Tagus in Portugal. The camera looks up the beach towards Cova do Vapor and the open sea.
The round fort out in the water is Bugio, built on a sandbank in the seventeenth century to close the entrance to Lisbon with crossfire from the far shore. It has been a lighthouse for two hundred years and the sea has been undermining it for longer.
This beach is fed by lorry and dredger: groynes and sand pumped ashore every few years are what stands between the dunes and the campsites behind them. Surfers use the northern end, where the sandbar shifts with each winter.
