Avenida Do Mar Crosswalk, Madeira Live Cam

Avenida do Mar runs along the seafront of Funchal, the capital of Madeira, and the camera watches a crossing on it. The marina and the cruise quay are on the far side of the road.

None of this frontage is original. The avenue stands on ground taken from the sea in stages through the twentieth century; the old waterfront is the line of buildings behind it, and the beach that was there has gone.

The road carries the carnival parade in February and the flower festival in spring, when it is closed and floored with petals. Cruise ships tie up a few hundred metres west, and on a busy day two of them will put several thousand people onto this pavement.
