Gniezno Town Square, Poland Live Cam

The market square at Gniezno lies in the old town of the first capital of Poland, in the Greater Poland region. The camera looks down on the fountain and the buildings around it.

The cathedral whose towers stand over the square holds a pair of bronze doors cast around 1175, worked in eighteen panels with the life and death of St Adalbert, the missionary bishop killed in Prussia whose body was bought back for its weight in gold.

In the year 1000 the emperor Otto the Third came here to that grave and recognised the Polish ruler as an equal, which is the moment the country dates its standing in Europe from. The square itself was laid out again after a fire in 1819.
