Av. Constitución, Monterrey Live Cam

Avenida Constitución runs along the bed of the Santa Catarina through the middle of Monterrey, in northern Mexico. The camera looks down on the road, the dry channel and the towers of the centre.

The river is empty most of the year and its bed is used for football pitches and running tracks. When it does run it is dangerous: hurricane rain in 1988 and again in 2010 filled the channel bank to bank and took out the bridges.

The mountains around the city funnel that rain into a short steep catchment, so the water arrives fast and leaves quickly. The rest of the time the channel is the largest open space in a city of five million, and is treated as such.
