Weather and time
This elevated view looks down on the Shibuya Scramble Crossing in Tokyo, where wide zebra stripes cross the junction in every direction. Crowds gather on the corners and then pour across all at once when the pedestrian lights change.
The crossing lies in front of the Hachiko exit of JR Shibuya Station and is often called the busiest pedestrian intersection in the world. During each walk phase all traffic stops, and people cross straight and diagonally at the same time. Hachiko Square beside the station is named after the loyal Akita dog whose bronze statue is a favorite meeting point.
The camera faces the station side, with the Tsutaya store on the left corner and a large tree in front of the station building on the right. From this height the whole pattern of crosswalks is visible, so each diagonal rush across the junction is easy to follow.
