Nine tracks run into the terminal side by side, which makes it the largest private railway station in Japan. Services on the Kobe, Takarazuka and Kyoto main lines all start here and leave every few minutes.

Umeda is the northern business and shopping centre of Osaka, on the Japanese island of Honshu, built around a cluster of stations that between them handle over two million passengers a day. The last trains run shortly after midnight, and the tracks stay dark until about five.
