Weather and time
The harbour at Ponza is a half-circle of pastel houses on a volcanic island west of Naples, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The camera looks over the quay and the ferries.
The town was designed. It was laid out in the 1730s by a Bourbon architect who brought settlers from Ischia to an island that had been left empty by pirate raids, and the curve of arcaded houses around the port is his.
The Romans were here first and cut tunnels through the headlands and fish tanks into the rock, several of which are still in use. Mussolini was held on the island for a few weeks in 1943 after his arrest.
