Rows of loungers and straw parasols line the beach at Kallithea, on the east coast of Rhodes in the Aegean. Hotel lawns and clipped shrubs take up the near half of the frame.

The shoreline here is coarse sand and shingle, with a stone groyne running out at the middle of the bay. The camera turns along it and reaches the rocks at either end.

Kallithea Springs, a spa complex the Italians built in the 1920s with domes, colonnades and pebble mosaics, stands a short way up the same coast. This eastern shore is sheltered from the meltemi and stays calmer than the west of the island.
