Rantum, Sylt Live Cam

Rantum stands on the narrowest part of Sylt, where a few hundred metres of dune separate the North Sea from the Wadden Sea. The camera looks down on the beach and the chairs from the top of the dune.

The island loses sand every winter. Since 1972 dredgers have pumped roughly a million cubic metres a year onto the west-facing beaches to replace it, which is the only reason the shoreline in the picture is still where it is.

Behind the village lies the Rantumbecken, a basin diked off in the 1930s for seaplanes and now a bird reserve on the migration route. Sylt belongs to Nordfriesland and is reached by a causeway that carries only trains.
