The beach at Westerland, on the island of Sylt on the German North Sea coast, lies below this hotel view. White marquees stand in a row on the sand, and the promenade with its shelters runs directly below the lens.

Sylt is the northernmost of the North Frisian islands, a long thin strip with some forty kilometres of open beach on the west side and the Wadden Sea tidal flats on the east. Westerland is its main town, and the beach in view is the busiest part of the western shore.

The marquees are put up for the summer season and come down again in autumn. Out of season the sand is largely empty and the wind off the North Sea is what the camera mostly shows.
