Hamburg Port Altona Holzhafen Live Cam

The Elbe runs past the Altona cruise terminal at Hamburg, a hundred kilometres inland from the North Sea. The camera looks across the water at the container quays and the passing ships.

That distance is the port's whole advantage and its whole problem. Being far up the river puts it closer to central Europe than any rival, but it means dredging: the channel has been deepened again and again, most recently in 2021, so that the largest container ships can still reach the quays.

The tide reaches this far and rises more than three metres. The brick warehouse district downstream, built on oak piles in the 1880s for coffee, spices and carpets, has been a UNESCO site since 2015.
