Weather and time

A wide-angle camera on the summit of Ukko-Luosto in Finnish Lapland watches the sky for northern lights above a forested plain. Lower down, the wooded slope of the fell drops away to a flat lowland of forest, open clearings and small ponds.

At 514 metres, Ukko-Luosto is the highest of the Luosto fells, about 30 km southeast of Sodankylä. The fells are part of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, a 35 km chain of quartzite ridges left from a mountain range almost two billion years old. A weather radar stands on the summit, and the resort village of Luosto lies at the foot of the fell.

The camera is meant for aurora watching, so the sky fills most of the frame above a low strip of land. On clear dark nights it has caught green auroral arcs among the stars. By day the near flank of the fell fills the left side, with low fells along the far right horizon.
