Šibenik stands on a slope above a natural harbour on the Adriatic coast, reached from the sea through a narrow channel. The camera pans across the roofs, the bay and the islands offshore.

The cathedral of St James in the old town was built entirely of stone: vaults and dome assembled from interlocking slabs, without brick or timber, by a method with no real parallel. It took over a century to finish and has been on the UNESCO list since 2000.

Unlike almost every other town on this coast, Šibenik was founded neither by Greeks nor Romans; it first appears in a charter of 1066. A hydroelectric plant on the Krka a few kilometres inland lit its streets with alternating current in 1895, days after the first plant at Niagara.
