Boutique Hotel am Stephansplatz Live Cam

Kärntner Straße runs south from Stephansplatz towards the opera, and the webcam looks down its length from a hotel roof. St Stephen's cathedral stands just out of the frame on the left.

The street was closed to traffic in 1974, one of the first in Vienna, and the crowds in the picture are the result. On the corner below sits the Stock im Eisen, a length of tree trunk studded with nails driven in by passing journeymen, kept behind glass since the nineteenth century.

The mirrored building facing the cathedral is the Haas Haus, finished in 1990 to a design by Hans Hollein and argued over ever since. The whole of this centre has been a UNESCO site since 2001.
