San Francisco International sits on filled ground along the western shore of the bay, in northern California. The camera looks over the water at the field with aircraft labels added.

The two pairs of runways here are unusually close together: about 230 metres between the parallel pair, which is not enough for two aircraft to land at once when the visibility is poor. In fog the arrival rate falls by half, which is why delays here spread across the country.

The airport was built out into the bay from the 1920s onwards and has been extended with fill several times since. The hills across the water are the East Bay.
