Watch the Spider Crabs, Monterey Bay Aquarium live webcam for an up-close view of Japanese giant spider crabs in the exhibition Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, United States. These are the largest crabs in the world, with ten legs that can reach up to 3.8 metres (12 feet) from claw to claw.
This marine crab has a carapace about 40 centimetres (16 inches) wide, and the whole body can weigh up to 19 kilograms (42 pounds). The camera also shows a model of a sperm whale carcass on the floor, called whalefall. When a whale dies, its carcass sinks to the ocean floor, where its nutrient-rich remains attract deep-sea creatures such as spider crabs and contribute to the ecosystem.
