Open Sea, Monterey Bay Aquarium Live Cam

The Open Sea exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium fills this view, on the coast of central California. Bluefin tuna cross the blue water in front of the lens, and a curtain of bubbles rises along the far wall of the tank.

The tank holds around four million litres and is built without visible corners, so the open-ocean animals in it — tuna, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, schooling sardines — can keep swimming in a circuit. The aquarium stands on Cannery Row in a former sardine cannery.

The fish swim into the current continuously, which makes the picture unusually steady for an aquarium. Feeds happen several times a day and break the pattern.
