Weather and time
This camera in the Gothic townsite, Colorado, looks west at the sheer rock face of Gothic Mountain above a band of dark conifer forest. Rows of vertical pinnacles cover the wall, with a pale scree summit to its right and a lower rocky ridge on the left.
Gothic Mountain rises to 12,631 feet (3,850 m) in the Elk Mountains, about 1.8 kilometers west of the townsite. Its name comes from those pinnacles, which were said to resemble Gothic architecture. The mining town established below it in 1879 took the same name and is now home to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory.
Aimed straight at the east face, the camera lets the cliff fill most of the frame. Overcast light shows the gray and cream bands of rock most clearly, while in the afternoon the summit is backlit and the wall turns darker.
