Weather and time

Smeaton's Tower is the red and white striped lighthouse that stands on Plymouth Hoe above Plymouth Sound. This fixed view looks west across the Hoe lawns, with a bronze monument beside the tower and Drake's Island on the water.

John Smeaton designed the lighthouse for the Eddystone Rocks in the 1750s, and it was rebuilt stone by stone on the Hoe in 1882. The Hoe is a broad grassy promontory with open views over the sea. Drake's Island, a small fortified island, lies in the middle of the Sound, and the Art Deco Tinside Lido opened at the foot of the slope in 1935.

The frame stays on one scene through the day: the grass slope in the foreground, the road curving down towards the lido, and the striped tower on the right. On the left the shoreline leads out to open water, with small boats in front of Drake's Island.
