Weather and time

African penguins occupy a pool and a gravel shore at Birdworld, a bird park in Surrey in the south of England. The camera looks over the enclosure from the visitor side.

The species used to be called the jackass penguin for the braying it makes, which sounds more like a donkey than a bird. It is the only penguin that breeds on the African continent.

Its numbers have collapsed: from over a million pairs a century ago to a few thousand, after the guano its burrows were dug in was stripped for fertiliser and the fish it eats were taken by trawlers. Parks like this one hold a managed population against that.
