Weather and time
A grey nesting tray for peregrine falcons stands among the lichen-covered stone battlements high on the roof of Romsey Abbey in Hampshire. Its gravel bed sits under a boarded roof, and past the parapet the roofs of Romsey give way to wooded hills.
Romsey Abbey was founded in 907 as a house for Benedictine nuns, and its Norman church dates from about 1130 to 1140. In 1544 the townspeople bought it from the Crown for £100, and it is now the largest parish church in Hampshire. This tray and its camera were installed for the 2025 breeding season.
The camera faces the open front of the tray, with a small ramp and a wire mesh panel by the low wall on the left. In 2025 the pair raised four chicks in an older tray in a gulley at the west end, and the abbey may move the broadcast to whichever tray the birds choose.
