Weather and time
A long-zoom view of Fawley Refinery in Hampshire shows tall chimneys, distillation columns and domed storage tanks above a belt of trees. Construction cranes and scaffolded towers stand among the process units, with white steam drifting from the plant.
The refinery lies on the western shore of Southampton Water, beside the village of Fawley in the New Forest district. Owned by Esso, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil, it is the largest oil refinery in the United Kingdom. The plant was rebuilt and expanded in 1951, when Prime Minister Clement Attlee opened it, and its marine terminal handles around 2,000 ship movements a year.
The strong zoom compresses the site into a dense industrial skyline. The framing changes over time: one view centres on the tallest chimney and the cranes, another on a slender flare stack and a row of columns behind a domed tank.
