Weather and time
A wooden tray of gravel set out for peregrine falcons stands on a high ledge of Ealing Hospital beside Uxbridge Road in west London. Ribbed concrete walls hem it in, and past the corner of the tower the view drops to the road, a red-roofed house and the grassy slope of Brent Meadow.
Ealing Hospital opened in 1979 between Southall and Hanwell. Peregrines had been roosting on the ten-storey building for about a year when volunteers fitted a nest box on its roof in 2021. A gravel tray on a ledge followed, and a pair has since raised chicks here on a diet of London pigeons and parakeets.
The camera looks along the face of the tower, with a railed walkway running away on the left. A falcon landing on the rim of the tray fills the foreground. In spring the gravel holds eggs and then chicks, and in other months the birds still stop here to perch.
