Nest Box, Nower Wood Live Cam

This camera looks down into a small bird nest box at Nower Wood, an oak woodland reserve near Headley, south-west of Leatherhead in Surrey. The black-and-white picture shows the dark wooden walls of the box and a thick cup of moss and soft fibres on its floor.

Nower Wood is a 33-hectare nature reserve at the head of the Little Switzerland valley, within the Surrey Hills. Most of it is ancient oak woodland, with patches of hazel coppice, chalk grassland and heath. A teaching centre for school groups opened on the reserve in 2017.

The box suits small woodland birds such as blue tits, great tits, coal tits and marsh tits. In the nesting season it can hold a brood of chicks raised by their parents, while outside it the frame shows the old nest. The camera is fixed at the top of the box, so the view always frames the nest cup from above.
