Weather and time

This camera looks down on the nest of Yaren the stork in Eskikaraağaç, a village on the shore of Lake Uluabat near Karacabey. Beyond the rim of piled twigs, a tiled roof with chimney stacks leads the eye out across the lake to a wooded hillside.

Lake Uluabat is a shallow lake in Bursa Province and a Ramsar-listed wetland rich in waterbirds. Eskikaraağaç is the only Turkish member of the European Stork Villages network. Yaren became famous across Turkey for its friendship with a local fisherman, landing on his boat on the lake. Each spring the stork returns to this nest and raises chicks with its mate.

The view is fixed and seen from above, so the nest lining of cloth scraps and other material is in plain sight. From late summer until the storks come back, the nest stands empty and small waterbirds on the lake give the frame its movement.
