S'Arenal is at the eastern end of the Platja de Palma, six kilometres of sand running along the bay from the city. The camera looks down the promenade and the beach beyond it.

The beach is navigated by numbers. Fifteen beach bars, the balnearios, are spaced along it and everything is located by the nearest one; number six is the one German visitors turned into a nickname for the whole strip.

The resort was built in the 1960s on what had been dunes and pinewood, and the pines behind the promenade are the last of it. Palma airport is four kilometres away, which is why aircraft cross the beach all day.
