Founders Lodge Waterhole, Paterson Live Cam

This camera looks over a waterhole in the valley below Founders Lodge, next to Shamwari Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. A red-earth bank, pale boulders and open grassland with distant hills surround the pond.

Founders Lodge was once the family home of Adrian Gardiner, who founded Shamwari, and it now stands on a private reserve of about 400 hectares beside the larger reserve. The lodge sits on the highest point of its land and overlooks the valley, near Paterson and about an hour's drive from Gqeberha. The area is free of malaria.

The camera stands at the edge of the pond, with a large orange boulder on the far bank and a bare, gnarled tree at the left. Its tilt changes through the day: some frames show mostly sky above the horizon, others fill the picture with the water, the boulders and the hills beyond.
