Weather and time

A steam locomotive stands under the water crane at Wolsztyn depot, in western Poland, in front of the camera. The shed behind it was built between 1896 and 1907.

This is the last depot in Europe rostering steam locomotives on ordinary timetabled trains. Engines from here work services towards Poznań, and the crews are railwaymen doing a job rather than volunteers running a preserved line.

The machines are mostly Ol49 mixed-traffic locomotives built in Poland in the 1950s, with a streamlined Pm36 kept for specials. The roundhouse, the turntable and the water tower are all still in use, which is what makes the place unusual rather than the engines themselves.
