Weather and time

This camera looks southeast across the tracks just south of Nagano Station, the main railway hub of Nagano City in central Japan. Platform canopies, overhead line gantries and the hotels of the East Exit district fill the frame, with mountains on the horizon.

Nagano grew up as the temple town of Zenkoji and is now the capital of Nagano Prefecture. Chuo-dori, the main approach to the temple, starts at the station's west exit. The Hokuriku Shinkansen reached the city in 1997, ahead of the 1998 Winter Olympics, and local trains to Matsumoto and Myoko-Kogen also depart from here.

Seen from an office block on the west side, the view shows the working rail side of the station rather than its plaza. A parking lot lines the near edge, then come the running lines and sidings under steel gantries, with the Shinkansen tracks along the far side.
