Weather and time
This view from the summit of Mount Hakodate looks down on Hakodate, a port city spread across a narrow neck of land in southern Hokkaido. Hakodate Bay with the square green island of Midori no Shima lies on the left, and the curving beach of the Tsugaru Strait runs along the right.
Mount Hakodate rises 334 metres at the south-western end of the city. It was once an island, later joined to the rest of Hokkaido by a sandbar on which the old town grew. Hakodate was one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade in 1859.
The camera faces north-east along the isthmus, over the rooftops and church towers of the Motomachi district toward the harbour piers and the hills on the horizon. A red ropeway cabin sometimes appears at the lower right edge, and after dusk the streets and waterfront fill with lights.
