Little Owl Nest, Tiszalök Live Cam

This camera watches the entrance of a little owl nest in the gable wall of a house in Tiszalök, a town on the Tisza in eastern Hungary. A slatted wooden landing board sits below an opening in the plastered wall that leads to a nest box in the attic.

Tiszalök lies on the upper Tisza, where a barrage and hydroelectric plant built in the 1950s hold back the river, not far from Hortobágy National Park. The little owl is a small owl of farmland and villages that often nests in buildings. It hunts beetles and small rodents, mostly after dusk.

The main picture looks along the wall at the entrance, with garden greenery at the left edge. A black-and-white inset at the top left shows the inside of the nest box, lined with wood shavings. In past seasons the first eggs were laid from late March, and the chicks usually hatched in late April or early May.
