Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Hungary

Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg is a county in the far northeast of Hungary, bordering Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania; its seat is Nyíregyháza and it has about 530,000 residents. The Tisza enters Hungary here, and the county stretches from the sandy Nyírség plain to the lowlands of the Upper Tisza. It is the country's main fruit-growing area, producing nearly half of Hungary's apples, and Szatmár plums are made into jam and pálinka. Its villages are known for wooden bell towers and old Calvinist churches such as the one in Tákos.
