Weather and time
An underwater webcam films the coral reef tank at the State Museum of Natural History in Karlsruhe, in southwestern Germany. Hard and soft corals cover the rock, and small reef fish move through the water in front of the lens.
The tank holds 240,000 litres and is run as a living reef rather than a display of specimens: the corals grow, and the fish, including a blacktip reef shark, live in the same volume of water. It is one of the larger reef aquariums in a European museum.
Feeding brings the fish together at one end of the tank, which is when the picture is busiest. The lighting follows a fixed daily cycle, so the reef dims and brightens regardless of the weather outside.
