Weather and time
Burgplatz is the oldest corner of Düsseldorf, and this camera watches it from above, together with the Rhine beyond. The Schlossturm, the promenade steps and the river traffic are all in frame.
The octagonal white tower in the centre of the picture is all that survived of the electors' castle after the fire of 1872; it now holds the city's maritime museum. Behind it rises the twisted spire of St. Lambertus, bent by centuries of drying timber and left crooked on purpose. The wide stone steps running down to the water fill with people on any warm evening, and excursion boats tie up at the landing stage below.
Upstream the Oberkasseler Brücke crosses the picture. Barges pass in both directions all day — the Rhine here is one of the busiest inland waterways in Europe.
