Weather and time
The Pollereshütte stands looking across at the Sonnwendstein above the Semmering pass, in Lower Austria. The camera covers the terrace and the wooded ridges below it.
The railway through the pass beneath is the reason people came up here at all. Built between 1848 and 1854 over viaducts and through tunnels, it was the first mountain railway in Europe laid to standard gauge, and it has been a UNESCO site since 1998.
The line brought Vienna up for the summer, and the villas and hotels along the pass date from that. A tunnel now being bored under the mountain will take the through trains and leave the old line to local services.
