Weather and time
This camera looks into the snow leopard enclosure at Melbourne Zoo in Parkville, facing tiers of grey rock ledges and a tall dead tree trunk. Snow leopards can be seen lying along the upper ledge, while the gravel floor below holds a patch of straw bedding ringed with branches.
Melbourne Zoo opened in Royal Park in 1862, about four kilometres north of the city centre. The snow leopards live in the Lion Gorge area along the carnivores trail of the zoo. African lions, Sumatran tigers and Tasmanian devils are housed nearby.
The fixed view spans the whole rockwork, from a leafy corner on the left to a shaded recess on the right, with chain-link fencing and dark shade netting behind. The pale, spotted coats blend into the grey stone, so a leopard resting on the top ledge can take a moment to notice.
