Roanoke, Virginia: a raised view from the Virginia Museum of Transportation over Norfolk Southern yard tracks and a preserved locomotive. Past the rails the frame reaches Park Street, warehouses and distant hills.

The museum occupies the historic Norfolk and Western freight station and keeps steam, diesel and electric locomotives alongside rolling stock. Roanoke is one of Norfolk Southern's principal hubs, with a large yard, locomotive servicing facilities and the old Roanoke Shops. It is the only place on the network where the Heartland and Crescent corridors cross.

The camera hangs on the museum building, so a locomotive roof and a red museum car fill the lower left. It usually rests on a wide look down the yard toward a highway overpass; at other times it turns to the main line, where a signal bridge and a road bridge stand in the distance.
