Peregrine Falcon Nest Box, Weston Power Plant, Rothschild Live Cam

A camera inside a peregrine falcon nest box high on the Weston Power Plant in Rothschild, Wisconsin, looks out over the plant grounds. Two rocks rest on green artificial turf between metal side panels, with a wide, flat horizon beyond the open front.

The power station stands on the east bank of the Wisconsin River in Marathon County, about seven miles south of Wausau. Nest boxes have been fitted on Wisconsin power plants since the early 1990s to help the peregrine falcon recover, giving the birds a high ledge in place of a cliff. Peregrines have returned to this box for many seasons, laying their eggs in spring.

The lens points out through the opening, so the turf and rocks fill the lower part of the picture. Beyond the edge of the box lie flat industrial structures, transmission towers, fields and woodland.
