Weather and time
This fixed camera overlooks a large osprey nest built on top of a pole in the west of Vancouver, Washington. The frame is filled by a wide round mass of sticks, moss and lichen, with a road and a railway line beyond it.
Vancouver sits on the north bank of the Columbia River, across from Portland, Oregon. Ospreys are migratory fish-eating raptors, and in this region adults usually return to their nests in mid or late March. They often reuse the same nest and add sticks every year, so nests grow large.
Besides the nest, the frame shows the gray top of a pole at the bottom, a red-painted curb along the road at the right and several wires crossing the scene. Outside the breeding season the nest stands empty, but when ospreys are present this is where adults, eggs and chicks can be watched.
