Weather and time
A fixed view over a highway in Melrose, New Mexico, with the BNSF main line running across the open plains behind a vacant lot. A rust-streaked metal building stands at the left and a small gray cabin with a porch at the right.
Melrose, a village in Curry County, grew up when the Santa Fe Railway arrived around 1906, and the line in view is the BNSF Clovis Subdivision at milepost 680.7. A green sign by the utility pole points toward Clovis and Tucumcari. The 1907 depot was demolished in 2020, so the view across the road is mostly open track and the plain beyond it.
The camera looks straight across the pavement, so a freight train shows up as a thin dark band between the trees and the cabin, behind the grass and the sign. Trucks on the road now and then cross the foreground.
