Weather and time
A wide view over the BNSF main line in Grants, New Mexico, with low houses and a long ridge on the far side of the tracks. Two tracks, a gravel apron and a signal gantry at the right edge fill the lower part of the frame.
Grants lies on the BNSF Gallup Subdivision at milepost 96.2, part of the Southern Transcon freight corridor, and historic Route 66 runs through town beside the railroad. The town sits on a high plateau at about 6,460 feet, with dark mesas and a bluish range along the horizon.
The camera is movable and its framing is not always the same: the angle and zoom change from one day to the next, so the rooftops and the signal gantry shift position in the frame. When a double-stack container train passes close to the lens, it hides the town behind a wall of boxes.
