Praia do Forte runs across this webcam view at Cabo Frio, in the Lakes Region east of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Umbrellas and kiosks cover the near sand, and the beach runs in a long curve towards the headland.

The sand here is unusually white and coarse because it is almost pure quartz, and the water is colder than elsewhere on this coast: upwelling brings deep water to the surface off Cabo Frio, which is also why the fishing is good. The beach is named after the São Mateus fort at its eastern end.

The town fills with visitors from Rio at weekends and through January. The wind that blows along this shore most afternoons is what keeps the kitesurfers here.
