Restaurant Alma La Mata, Alicante Live Cam

La Mata beach runs north from Torrevieja on the coast of Alicante, with a wooden boardwalk behind the sand. The camera looks along the shore from a restaurant on the front.

Behind the town lie two salt lagoons, and one of them is pink: the colour comes from micro-organisms and algae that live in water saltier than the sea. The pair form a natural park and take flamingos through the winter.

Salt has been worked here since the Middle Ages and the lagoons still produce it in quantity, loaded at a pier south of the town. The dry air coming off them is why nineteenth-century doctors sent patients to Torrevieja in the first place.
